Sunday saw Italy’s top-flight football league Serie A become the first live broadcasters of a football match in the metaverse. To match the landmark occasion, the footballing splendour on offer was a match between domestic giants AC Milan and Fiorentina, where in this case, fans witnessed the former triumph 1-0, which in doing so, took them to the league’s all-important summit.
The first-of-its-kind event was the product of a collaboration between multi-billion dollar blockchain technology company ConsenSys and gaming platform, The Nemesis. The match itself was broadcast from the Serie A room in The Nemesis metaverse, a virtual space which is accustomed to hosting an array of live experiences such as concerts and parties.
Despite the metaverse’s in-built inclusivity ethos, this particular event only held host to fans from Africa and the Middle East (i.e. the MENA region), who were able to gain exclusive access to the virtual viewing via NFT tickets. Just as if they were watching sports in a physical context, the spectating virtual room also provided fans with the ability to interact with each other, as well as be provided with real-time stats throughout the game.
In speaking on the endeavour, Luigi De Siervo, CEO of Serie A, had this to say: “We believe that the frontier of technological innovation is extremely important for a modern league”.
